Breaking News: Attorney General Decides to Indict PM Netanyahu

Dear friends,

We are all reacting to the breaking news of the Israeli Attorney General’s recommendation to indict Prime Minister Netanyahu. As we watch the events unfold in real-time, it’s not easy to miss the parallel to the current impeachment attempt in Congress.

Let’s remind ourselves, before the media frenzy prevails: In a democracy, and ours is unique in the Middle East, an indictment is not a conviction, and all people are presumed innocent until proven guilty. And yet, the political reverberations here are strong. Just last night the mandate for Netanyahu’s opposition to cobble together a government was returned unfulfilled, and tensions are running high as no leader wants to be the reason Israel goes to its third (!) consecutive election round this season.

Another fact: Netanyahu’s opponents have tried time and again to oust him from office by unsuccessfully accusing him of wrongdoing. His tenure is the longest of any of Israel’s prime ministers, perhaps this is the only way his detractors saw their chance to beat him – if not at the polls, then in the courts. The parading of a long list of tried-and-disproven accusations, the personalities longing to achieve a change of course and the sensationalism of today’s media have come together in a volatile situation, one that we do not know how it will end.

We will try to keep you updated as the story unfolds.
